LIFE SKILLS TRAINING

BEHAVIOUR SUPPORTS

PROGRAMS DIVISION

Supports those participants with the greatest needs and focuses primarily toward enhancing quality of life. Cosmo provides a supportive environment in which to experience a wide variety of opportunities promoting sensory stimulation, learning, independence, and socialization. Group activities are facilitated for participants who have similar skills, needs, and interests.

Rather than solely reducing the frequency, duration, and intensity of challenging behaviors, the objective of Comprehensive Behavior Support is to facilitate lifestyle changes. This includes assessment of the factors influencing a participant’s behavior, the development of behavior support plans, and the implementations of strategies that teach participants new skills.

Designs and implements programs which assist program participants in meeting their social, physical, vocational and academic goals. The programs are created for the individual needs of the participant with ongoing reporting and a yearly review of the personal program plan.  Whenever possible vocational activities and job skill training are incorporated into programs.

PERSONAL AND MEDICATION ASSISTANCE

ART PROGRAM

Personal Care staff attend to over 300 toileting and hygiene needs per day.  Cosmo participants have access to professional massage services as well as a foot care program.
A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and her staff ensure that daily medical needs are met and medications are properly administered.  The preventative health services we provide reduces costs to the province’s health care system by lessening the use of emergency rooms for minor aliments.  We also coordinate with the Saskatoon Health Region to provide on-site flu vaccines each year.

Cosmo has an art program available to all participants.  We would love to begin an Artist-in-Residence program to assist with the development of the creative talents of adults with intellectual disabilities and bring their creations to market.

RECREATION

There are myriad of recreational opportunities planned by our team of Disability Support Workers (DSW).  These may be annual events with the Summer Wind-up and Winter Carnival, in-house recreation such as floor hockey or location-based activities like mall-walking and bowling.  With the assistance of volunteers there are literally hundreds of opportunities for fun, exercise, socializing and adventure.

TRANSPORTATION

Many participants who attend our day programs require assistance with their transportation needs in order to attend Cosmo.  In addition to the contracted services of First Bus Canada funded by the Ministry of Social Services, Cosmo operates our own buses and vans.  With a growing city and an aging fleet, it is through the generosity of community minded companies such as Miners Construction and Galon Insurance and Mortgage Brokers that we are able to meet the transportation needs of persons with disabilities.
